   Tension-compression test

The deformation behavior of metallic materials is usually determined employing cylindrical specimens. These specimens can, however, not be used for compression tests of sheet materials. Of particular interest in connection with the modelling of spring-back during deep drawing is the evaluation of plastic deformation in compression after preceding plastic deformation in tension (Bauschinger effect). This behavior is characterized by cyclic stress strain curves.

In order to measure those curves also for sheet metals, a new test set-up had to be realized at IWM in a very stiff servo-hydraulic test machine. The picture shows a section of this set-up with the specimen holder and sensors for strain measurement, together with the new optimized specimen shape.

With that arrangement strain amplitudes of over 10% are possible without buckling of the specimens, and cyclic stress-strain curves can be determined for sheet metal materials of a thickness as small as about 1 mm.

The animation shows such a test, together with the cyclic stress-strain curve.

With this set-up it is also possible to perform isothermal and non-isothermal fatigue experiments and to determine LCF-fatigue parameters to be applied for the lifetime-assessment of exhaust components.
