Bearing technology

The purpose of the ongoing research activities at IWM is the development of advanced bearings, particularly for the food industry. Such bearings should operate without lubricants or be lubricated just by the transported material.

An important step towards this goal is the development of a hybrid bearing involving ceramic rollers (Si3N4, ZrO2) and coated races (100Cr6, AISI440). For design, evaluation and optimization of such components the numerical simulation plays an ever growing role.
Simulation of a roller bearing with consideration of the surface roughness. The stresses are transferred from the microscopic model (bottom) to the macroscopic model (top).

Kompetenzen
  • Design of floating and roller bearings using numerical simulation and considering the microstructure

  • Optimization of bearing geometry and contact area n

  • Improvement of the contact strength by shot-peening and surface coating

  • Coating of bearings for dry environment

  • Surface structuring for improved friction and wear properties
